My wellness journey began in frustration and confusion. After the birth of my second son, my body felt foreign to me. I weighed 185 pounds of pregnancy weight for too long, and even after getting down to 155 pounds, I still looked and felt as though I weighed 185 due to inflammation. For someone who had always been slim and fit, this was a tough reality, as I thought it was body fat.
I was in constant pain, plagued with brain fog, memory loss, muscle atrophy, and drastic skin changes. No matter how disciplined I was—working out, counting calories, eating clean (1/2 a plate of broccoli was my norm) and even working with a personal trainer—nothing worked. I felt trapped in a body that didn’t feel like mine anymore.
Finally, a suggestion from my trainer led me to a naturopathic doctor, which set me on the path to uncovering the root causes of my struggles. The journey wasn’t easy—I discovered I had heavy metal toxicity from silver fillings, mold exposure, and later gadolinium poisoning from MRI contrast. On top of that, I battled gut issues, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and injuries from a car accident. We won't even get into parasites that we all carry and don't even know it!
One breakthrough came when I was introduced to infrared sauna therapy. It was love at first sweat. The infrared sauna reduced my pain, cleared my brain fog, brought back my energy and gave me a sense of hope again. When I couldn’t access a sauna during the summer of 2023, my symptoms came roaring back. The pain, coupled with relentless rain and cold weather, left me truly depressed for the first time in my life and I understood how people could contemplate taking their life. That feeling scared the hell out of me!! It was then that I vowed to do whatever it takes to get my life back AND create a space where others wouldn’t have to face those same barriers to relief and would be supported in their wellness journey.
I also discovered float therapy during this time. My first session left me so relaxed that I could barely drive home. The combination of medical-grade Epsom salt and sensory deprivation was transformative for my physical and mental health.
Through this journey, I kept exploring. Halotherapy became another key to my wellness. With a lingering respiratory illness, I decided to give it a try. After just one session, my lungs started clearing, and by the third, I felt like myself again after a bought of lord knows what! Inspired by how much halotherapy could help with respiratory issues, I wanted to ensure it was accessible to others.
These modalities, combined with cold plunge and red light therapy, have become staples for my family. My sons, both athletes, rely on halotherapy, sauna and cold plunge for recovery and immunity. My husband and I incorporate all of the modalities at Calm Down, with a particular focus on the sauna for detoxification, sleep and pain relief. We also use contrast therapy to reduce inflammation and boost our overall health. While most people shy away from cold, I used to hate being cold too—the cold from the plunge is completely different. It’s not like the winter chill; it’s a rejuvenating, invigorating experience that leaves you feeling refreshed, restored and for me pain free.
